Smart Extraction for Shipping & Logistics Documents: Automate Bill of Lading, Manifests & More
Manually processing shipping documents like Bills of Lading slows logistics operations and increases errors. UpBrains AI instantly extracts structured data from transportation documents to streamline supply chain workflows.
The Challenge with Transport Documentation
Whether it's a paper manifest, a scanned bill of lading, or an emailed delivery note, most logistics paperwork is still unstructured. This means valuable data like shipment numbers, destinations, weights, and contents must be reviewed manually before entering systems like WMS or TMS.
With UpBrains Extractor, that work becomes automatic.
How to Extract Information from Transportation Documents
Here's how to turn your logistics documents into structured, machine-readable data:
1. Open the Extractor Tool
Navigate to Extractor from the left-hand menu in the UpBrains platform.
2. Create a New Custom Extractor
Click Create Custom Extractor to begin setup.
3. Define Your Extractor
Set a meaningful name like "Transportation Doc Extractor".
(Optional) Set the Document Class to "Shipping" or "Logistics".
In the Instructions Field, clearly describe what to extract. For example:
- Shipment ID or Tracking Number
- Sender and Receiver Information
- Shipping and Delivery Dates
- Carrier Info or Vehicle Number
- Origin and Destination
- Line Items (products or goods being shipped)
- Quantity, Weight, or Volume
4. Add Fields and Line Items
Create fields for each data point. For structured item lists, add Line Item Keys, such as:
- Product Name
- Quantity
- Weight
- Unit of Measure
- Total Volume
5. Upload a Sample Document
Use a representative file: PDF, image (scan), or plain text. Click Extract to run the test and preview extracted values.
Adjust your field definitions if needed.
6. Publish Your Extractor
Once the results are accurate, hit Publish to finalize.
